What can we expect from the use of bots?
Bots - much better than their reputation
Bots, computer programs that operate independently according to given patterns, have become more and more important in recent years - both in IT and in society in general. Social bots, which are supposed to influence moods and opinions in social media, have led to a negative public image. The programs can certainly also be used for positive purposes.
What can bots do today ...
One area where bots are already performing very well is customer service. In chat channels, users can ask specific questions or describe problems and receive suitable solutions from a bot. Of course, not every matter can be clarified that way. Bots, however, can effectively help to relieve the "normal" customer service. Bots are also very helpful in marketing because they automatically collect information about (potential) customers and make advertising more effective.
... and what will they do tomorrow?
The customer service example from the previous paragraph also shows the limits of bots. They can only act according to the previously programmed patterns - anything that goes beyond them overwhelms them. It is possible to steadily expand the situations that bots can respond to. A real solution to this limitation, however, is not. With Watson from IBM, however, there is already an outlook on the bots of the future: they will learn from previous situations and use these findings to independently develop solutions.
